Q: When I get my cholesterol checked, my total cholesterol and lipids are also reported. What are those?
A: Triglycerides are fats found in the blood. High triglycerides may cause hardening of arteries or thicken artery walls causing an increased risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke.
Total cholesterol is measured by LDL, HDL and other lipoproteins found in the blood. Total cholesterol is typically the number your doctor will look at to determine if actions are needed to reduce cholesterol, however, all components are very important.
